Multiple choice

Most of the questions you see will be in the standard multiple-choice format. In multiple-choice questions, the tester asks a question and you are given four possible answers. The following sample question and explanation will show you how to use the steps above to find the correct answer:

Judging from the first three paragraphs of A Modest Proposal, the problem Jonathan Swift hopes to remedy with his proposal could be:

A. The proliferation of beggars in Ireland.

B. The slave trade in Barbados.

C. The starvation of children in Ireland.

D. Extreme worldwide poverty.

As with many MCAT verbal reasoning questions, you see here that it is fairly easy to eliminate some answers, while at least two seem to be correct. You should be able to eliminate answer choice (B) quite quickly because Barbados is mentioned only in passing as a possible destination for Ireland’s poverty-stricken youth. You may be tempted by answer choice (A) because beggars are mentioned in several paragraphs. However, in the last paragraph he makes it clear that he is hoping to help the children of beggars (and others), not the beggars themselves. As if often the case, then, you are left with two choices, both focused on the children in question. One answer choice, however, is too broad. You might not know enough about Swift to realize that he is writing about Ireland; the country’s name is not mentioned. However, he does specifically say that the problem he is discussing occurs in this country or kingdom. Therefore, answer choice (D) is incorrect because it is too broad. The passage talks about the necessity of supporting the children of the poor Irish, so the answer is (C). Even if you did not know that the passage was about Ireland, the “could be” phrasing of the question allows Ireland to be the correct answer.
